What are the consequences of being “sandwiched” between generations in the workplace and at home? How do we cope with the expectation of others for us to be “the rock” for both the young and the old? What is the role of spirituality in managing the stress in our lives? What are the symptoms that reveal we are holding stress in our bodies, and what can we do about it? Can we use the changes that take place in mid-life as an opportunity to help us stop and evaluate where we’ve been, where we are, and where we want to go from here? Opening Statement: Edna Kane-Williams, Vice President, Multicultural Markets, AARP While millions of Americans have experienced hard times during the economic recession, the environment for many African Americans age 45+ and their families is particularly difficult, according to a new survey by AARP. Tai Chi is a powerful tool for creating a harmonious balance of mind, body and soul. Yuko is a master teacher who will give an introduction to Tai Chi and teach simple Tai Chi/Qi Gong practices anyone can do at home. Tai chi is considered a soft style martial art, an art to harness your internal power called “chi” or “qi”. It is a form of moving meditation, as focusing the mind solely on the movements of the form reportedly helps to bring about a state of mental calm and clarity. You will leave this session renewed and centered. 1:00 PM Program Ends "We envision a world where everyone has an equal chance to live a long and healthy life." The first Sisters Staying Healthy Conference was held by Life-Long in the backyard of Lady Effie's Tea Parlor in South Los Angeles. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With this vision of healthy longevity for all, the Sisters Staying Healthy Conference began in 2002 with a small gathering of women at Lady Effie’s Tea Parlor in South Los Angeles. The convener of the event was Life-Long, a program of Community Partners®. This year the program will address how mid-life physical and emotional stressors affect the health status of working women sandwiched between generations. What are the cultural factors that influence how women respond to these mid-life stressors? And what are the larger societal implications of a maturing workforce? This event is for health, mental health, social service, human resource and other professionals whose work involves serving populations of women disproportionately affected by stress. At this interactive program, attendees will learn to differentiate racial and ethnic disparities in levels and manifestations of mid-life stress in working women, and learn strategies for reducing stress and promoting balance between the demands of worklife and homelife for their clients, as well as for themselves. 4 Diet Pitfalls—and How to Avoid Them FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER When people are experiencing "stubborn pounds" that won't budge off their bodies, and they are working out consistently, "I bet it's an everyday eating habit that is undermining your hard work." It's natural for us to be less than honest with ourselves about where we're cheating on our nutritional plans. We work out and have the best of intentions for our daily menus, but we end up falling short of our goals for a balanced nutrition for various reasons. Some of the most common pitfalls can be avoided simply by being aware of them. 1. Stress eating. I know that food is comforting—you know, the mac and cheese; the chips and dips (creamy one’s); an entire pint of butter pecan ice cream . . . enough said. But there are so many better ways to beat stress than by eating. Do this instead: Get up go to the gym, put on your mp3 player and sweat out your stress. If you are bored with that type of work out, play some of your favorite music and start dancing. Focus on your body and forget the snacks, and get some air deep into your lungs, clear your head, feel your blood pumping, and work your legs. It will only take a few minutes for you to reap big benefits from getting active. You will feel so much better than if you overate. 2. Grazing. Many people have a complete lack of structure to their daily meals—they actually never stop nibbling all day long. From donuts in the morning all the way through to chips in front of the TV for late-night viewing. Grazers have absolutely no set meal times, and end up shutting down their body's natural calorie-burning cycle through the constant intake of calories. Do this instead: Avoid the bad stuff, instead of vending-machine junk and food with low nutritional value, pack healthy snacks for nibbling. Like apples with peanut butter, or celery and carrot sticks. Make time for balanced meals that will satisfy your appetite so you won't be reaching for whatever's near. 3. Unconscious eating. Eating without paying attention to what you're doing, or without even realizing that you're consuming calories. Do this instead: Keeping a food journal is the best way I know to determine whether you have unconscious-eating tendencies. 4. Double portions. It's not just restaurants that are offering us bigger portions to show us the value of their meals; it's loved ones and friends and ourselves who proudly serve up much more than our bodies need for fuel at meals—on a regular basis. It's because we think we're showing love, or are being shown love, through food. The sad fact is that "double portions” are more food than needed for a balanced meal. Double portions are in excess of what your body requires, and WAY more than you can burn in your daily workout so just stop “doubling up”. Do this instead: Ask yourself: do 20 bites of a sandwich really taste that much better than 10? How do those 10 extra bites taste when you know you can't burn them off that day and at least half that sandwich is going to turn into those "stubborn" unwanted pounds. Yes, these are four common pitfalls. They're all too common—but that doesn't make them any less devastating to our fitness results and our ultimate health goals (and don't forget that it can also be discouraging to the mental image you have of where you want to be). Be aware of where you might be defeating yourself and take some time to form a personal plan to help you avoid these pitfalls on a daily basis. Peace and blessings, Gwen P.S. follow up on BodybyGwen.net for further articles.

SNACKS THAT WORK FOR EVERYBODY! 1. Turkey Roll-Ups-Try a few slices of turkey rolled around string cheese and some lettuce or cucumber. The combination of lean protein and some fat is a nutritionally balanced snack. 2. Dairy with fruit-The mix of low-fat dairy like yogurt or soft cheese (ricotta, cottage, string) and high-fiber berries provides protein, calcium and antioxidants and keeps blood sugar stable. 3. Edamame-Often eaten as appetizers in Japanese restaurants, these steamed soybeans can be found in supermarkets freezer section and are a low-fat source of protein. 4. Popcorn with Parmesan-Three cups of air-popped popcorn (no butter) topped with one to two tabelspoons of grated parmesan is low in calories and high in taste. 5. Apples with Peanut Butter-A few slices of apple smeared with almond butter is a sweet and savory healthy snack. The apple is a good source of soluble fiber (so you feel full), and the almond butter is a vitamin-rich, monounsaturated fat. In style 2007

YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!! As women, we can lift everyone else up but ourselves. Our children come first and then our husbands of course, don't forget the job. By the end of the day, we look in the mirror after everyone is a sleep, to see a woman we are not pleased with. That is the woman until now has been too busy to love and care for herself. We look in the mirror and resent what we see. We may say "I'm too skinny", "I'm too fat", this is sagging over here, and why when I wave my arms in July do I look like a turkey's kneck at Thanksgiving in November? I must then say "enough is enough." I know the God that I serve wants me to be more than this. Ladies, you do know how powerful you are. You have heard the expression the "man is the head, but the woman is the body" Ladies let's get our bodies in order. Submission, is mentioned in the Bible. Women we must submit to a power higher than us. We know that if God has made us an overcomer, through those things we don't talk about, so why don't we believe God to deliver us from being overweight! Notice I said overweight not skinny. Note: Skinny doesn't mean that you are in shape. A person can be thin and have no cardivascular endurance! Some of these woman can't even run up a flight of stairs. The world says that as long as you "look thin" you must be in shape. Not true. It's about being healthy and loving the body god gave us. Ladies it's time to pray that radical prayer like never before. 1st Peter 5:7, casting all your cares, etc. It's important to put down the pride which we know cometh before the fall, Proverbs 16:18, and tell our families, that I need this in order to stay alive. I must make time to exercise. Walking, yoga, jogging, etc. All that matters, is that I get started. Ladies, I am learning to confess with my mouth to God about those inner demons/feelings and let God handle them. Those childhood issues that got me either eating too much or not enough to hide the pain of our pasts. Well enough is enough we are not victims, but we are victorious and remember we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us! Go out exercise and be blessed. Gwen, Body by Gwen

TO ALL WOMEN OF GOD! Ladies, as it says in 1st Corinthians 6:19-20, that our body is the temple for the Holy Spirit, and that we are to glorify God with our body to truly praise God we must be in order. The renewing of our minds, respecting what we put in our bodies and of course if the mind and body are not in order, how then can the Holy Spirit be in peace? Ladies, it is time to stop wandering in the promise land of "lack of self-control over our bodies" and take action and walk in the promise land that God has given you. It is our right to claim dominion over yhour life. You are a citizen of the Kingdom, so act like it! Ladies, remember Psalm 139:14 "I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Ladies rest in that assurance and start some form of exercise. Take the clothes off of the treadmill and start small, 5 minutes a day and work your way up to more minutes adding some incline. Have mustard seed faith. (Mathew 17:20) All that matters is that you start! Be patient with yourself. You are making a "lifestyle change", not a quick diet type mindset. Remember, "what's fast doesn't last." Ladies, begin cooking with less salt, yes even Lawry's season salt. I don't mean cut-it-out completely, but gradually. Ladies in your busy lifestyles, that the way to be committed to your health is to be realistic and start off small. I tell you your life will run better when you feel good from the inside out, not only spiritually, but also physically. You will have more energy and hyour family will see the love you have for yourself, and God will motivate them through youl if they aren't already active. Now that's what God wants. Free activity of our limbs so that we can be a blessing to Him for all that He continues to bless us with. Note: I can do all things through God who strengthens me. God bless you! Gwen
